A romantic escape set in the historic, seaside town of Newport, The Cliffside Inn is a couple’s ideal luxurious destination with the comforts and senses of home. The Inn also serves as a perfect getaway for small groups,, families, and friends. This was my husband’s first visit to Newport and my second. The last time I explored Newport was nine years ago while on a holiday bus trip from Hartford, CT where I visited several of the mansions during the holidays. I had longed to come back for several years and was delighted that I had the opportunity to stay for the weekend.
We arrived to The Cliffside Inn late on Friday night. We were so pleased with the communication with the staff prior to our arrival, regarding where we could pick up our key and where to park. My husband and I stayed in The Carriage House, which has its own private entrance, its own parking space, and is just steps away from the main house.
One of the most charming and down-to-earth seaside resorts I have ever stayed at. Located just twenty minutes away by car from New London, Saybrook Point Inn and Spa offers beautiful, scenic views of of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound. A perfect getaway for the weekend away from Boston or New York City as well as a prime location for a wedding or family reunion, the resort and spa is also less than thirty minutes away from Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, offering an exceptional alternative to relax the weekend away with the close proximity of the arenas and casinos. Old Saybrook itself is a quaint, historic town rich in history. Did you know, for example, that Yale’s original college campus was in what is now Old Saybrook, and the town was the former home of one of Hollywood’s greatest, Katharine Hepburn? There is a cultural arts center affectionately named ‘The Kate’ in her honor less than two miles from the Inn.
The details and amenities throughout are exquisite. The Inn includes several different types of accommodations including the Main Inn, two guesthouses, the Lighthouse Suite located on the marina, and vacation and long term rentals. Their villas are available for you to enjoy year-round on a weekly and monthly basis or even longer. The two historic guesthouses, Tall Tales and Three Stories, located just steps away and opposite from the Main Inn, allowing for ample privacy. The houses feature living spaces such as common room areas, game rooms, and roof-top fire pits that are perfect for mingling with fellow guests, enjoying a late night snack or early breakfast.
Fresh Salt at Saybrook Point Inn & Spa in Old Saybrook, Connecticut encompasses every dreamy detail of your perfect restaurant: local, seasonal ingredients; friendly, genuine staff, fantastic food, and some of the most breathtaking views of the Connecticut River. The dining room as well as its outdoor dining space, including a high top table, overlooks the mouth of the Connecticut River where it meets the Long Island Sound, and has a stunning vantage point of the marina. Inside, the coastal interior is very warm and inviting, with cozy corner booths and dim lighting.
There was plenty of activity throughout the restaurant and bar area when we arrived on a Friday evening in late October. Our waitress, the sweetest woman we had ever met, went above and beyond by suggesting a dish from each course from their dinner menu as well as detailing local points of interest in the area. She truly wanted us to have a wonderful experience while tasting a variety of dishes, and we certainly did!
I had the pleasure of enjoying a lovely, whimsical stay at one of my favorite spots on the East End, c/o The Maidstone in the historic Village of East Hampton. This eclectic and chic boutique was just the spot my husband and I needed for a little ‘staycation’ with our daughter. The entire hotel is family-friendly and dog friendly, making it an ideal escape for everyone. Every aspect of The Maidstone and their restaurant, The Living Room Restaurant, is so inviting and stylish. You could spend your entire stay at the hotel and still not discover every chic and heartwarming Scandinavian detail this oasis has to offer.
We began our stay by checking in just after 3:30pm, set our belongings in our room, Josef Frank. Each of their 19 rooms, named after a Scandinavian celebrity or historical figure, is individually designed and has its own character and charm. Austrian-born Josef Frank was a renowned artist and architect who adopted Swedish citizenship in the latter half of his lifetime. The room features an original Josef Frank banana sofa by the bay window and a dressing room, a marble bathroom featuring a free-standing claw foot tub along with a separate rainfall shower, a King-size Hästens bed, luxurious toiletries by Malin + Goetz, and flat screen television with a DVD player.
The Mill House Inn in East Hampton is one of my favorite spots in the Hamptons for an overnight stay and the best breakfast you could ever imagine. New at Mill House Inn this summer includes a variety of refreshing iced beverages, homemade ice pops, juices, and more. Recently, I caught up with Executive Chef Carolyn Stec to learn more about the menu additions and what’s new a the Inn.
