On Sunday, November 15th, my husband, daughter, and I attended the first annual Chocolate & Sweets FantaSEA Fest at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. The chocolate tasting event was included with our aquarium general admission pass. Whoever said undersea life and chocolate do not mix must be mistaken! Nearly everything pairs perfectly with chocolate and the location couldn’t have been better. While my husband and I were tasting fudge, truffles, chocolate sauce, honey, jams, and more, my daughter was entranced with the fish, seals, sharks, sea stars, and more.
I was lucky to have discovered a few new (and old) confectionery and specialty food businesses on Long Island! With about forty participating vendors, we discovered tons of gift ideas for family and friends. It is never to early to get a head start on your holiday shopping, as I tend to start in early November. Below is a selection of my favorite chocolate and sweet tastings at the event. Prepare for an intense sugar craving!
Peppermint Chocolate Szauce, Old School Favorites
Old School Favorites have done it again with their irresistible chocolate szauce, now available in peppermint chocolate, and caramel chocolate. The peppermint is my favorite, with its cool layer of mint nestled in each spoonful.
Pumpkin Spice Caramels, Dove Chocolate Discoveries
A wide assortment of chocolate creations from the sweet to the savory side. There is something for everyone from their granolas and chocolate covered nuts to salsas and martini mixes. In particular, the pumpkin spice caramels are the perfect treat to transition from the autumn harvest to the holiday rush.
Cookies & Cream on a Saltine, Wild Lizzy’s Gourmet Saltine Cookies
A very unique twist on chocolate. Ever love to nosh on saltine crackers with your soup or right before a meal at your local diner? Who knew that you can create a gourmet cookie that tasted so outstanding as Lizzy has done! Aside from my favorite Cookies & Cream, there is a wide assortment including Cinnamon Toast, Old Fashioned Peanut Butter, and Peppermint Kiss, a seasonal flavor.
Dark Seasonal Wildflower Honey, BarnaBee Honey
With The Original BarnaBee Honey, you will taste the purest form of wildflower honey. Raw, unheated, and soaring with health benefits, their honey is sold in light, medium and dark varieties. I chose the bolder, dark seasonal honey, perfect for sweetening oatmeal and breads.
Crème Brûlée Taffy, North Fork Taffy
A fun treat that instantly brings you back to your childhood, North Fork Taffy has a wide assortment of artisanal salt water taffy including Vanilla Bean, Red Apple, Salted Caramel, and a special ode to the North Fork: North Fork Red Wine. Crème Brûlée was the taffy I reached for first.
Pumpkin Spice Latte Fudge, Chocology // Fat Ass Fudge
There is a heavenly assortment of fudge flavors from Milk Chocolate Caramel Swirl to Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge just waiting to be devoured. Try my favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte Fudge, taste but don’t chew, and let the autumn notes enrobe your tongue with the sweetest sensations.
Chocolate Covered Nutter Butter, Roe Roe’s Sweet Street
When I approached their booth, I instantly felt like that youngster in a candy store. With so many creative options, there is no telling what you will want to try. While strolling down Sweet Street, I first tasted their assortment of fudge flavors and chocolate covered nostalgic treats, with their Chocolate Covered Oreos being in close second to the Chocolate Covered Nut Butter.
