I love great food all year round, but there is something about the holidays where each crafted dish must be special. From incorporating herbs grown at home to using a special technique my parents and grandparents taught me, each recipe enrobes heartwarming memories all with great taste and good fun. One of my favorite recipes I love to create during the holidays are cheese spreads. Cheese spreads have always been a staple centerpiece dish at home growing up. We all loved to pick our favorite ingredients to add in, a little of this and that, and create our own unique recipes. My family and I would write these recipes down on a notepad, and keep it in the kitchen drawer to reference for making again throughout the year.
Heluva Good! has the perfect cheese for entertaining. Not only because of how diverse their Heluva Good! Cheese block selection is (think Colby Jack to White Sharp Cheddar), the quality and mouthwatering taste is so exceptional, and it really adds that extra bite to any cheese dish. Their selection is a great choice for the holidays as well as year round for any occasion. You can easily incorporate their cheese blocks into everyday recipes from omelettes and grilled cheese sandwiches to late night fajitas and casseroles. Even for a simple cheese and crackers plate, Heluva Good! Cheese provides the ultimate snacking experience.
You can find Heluva Good! Cheese blocks in the dairy aisle of many local Walmart stores. I love shopping for their cheese at Walmart because they always keep their products fully stocked and always have a wide variety of each irresistible flavor. Their cheese blocks are available in supermarkets in New York (New York, Syracuse, Buffalo/Rochester, Albany), Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh, Harrisburg/Scranton, Philadelphia), Connecticut (Hartford), Massachusetts (Springfield, Boston), Ohio (Cleveland, Columbus), Rhode Island (Providence), Florida (Tampa/St. Petersburg, Orlando), Virginia (Roanoke), Maryland (Baltimore), and Washington D.C.

I had to capture this photo rather quickly. The store was quite busy with holiday shoppers and there were other customers around me looking at and about to pickup Heluva Good! Cheese for purchase. It was very easy to find and accessible in the refrigerated grocery section of Walmart. For this recipe we decided to use Heluva Good! Mild Cheddar Cheese. We also love their Special Reserve Extra Sharp Cheddar for this recipe and will be recreating it with that cheese block next week for when some guests come to visit from the city.
Cheese spreads are some of my favorite recipes to make during the holiday season. You can mix and match your choice of nuts, dried fruits and spices to create your favorite cheese spread. I love to use notes of the season including cranberries and walnuts with greenery spice accents from the rosemary and thyme. Once everything is plated and set out for guests, I love to sit, relax and mingle with everyone for hours. The cheese spread keeps everyone satisfied before our meal or even must by itself paired with a great cider or holiday spirit.

Time to make it!
Fig and Walnut Herbed Cheese Spread
- 8 oz. block cream cheese, room temperature
- 4 ounces shredded Heluva Good! Cheese Block Mild Cheddar Cheese or Special Reserve Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup dried cranberries
- 1/2 cup dried figs, chopped
- 2 T fresh thyme
- 1 T fresh rosemary, chopped
- Using a standard mixer with the paddle attachment, stir cream cheese, Heluva Good! cheese, until smooth or about 1 minute
- Using a spoon or spatula, gently stir in fresh rosemary, thyme and dried fruits
- Spoon cheese mixture into a small serving bowl, chill for a couple of hours before serving
- Serve with crackers, nuts, and or a lightly buttered herbed crostini
Tip: make this spread ahead of time. You can make it up to a day in advance and keep in your refrigerator. For easier spreading, remove from the fridge an hour prior to your guests arriving. I love soft crackers, so instead of spreading and breakage, use a small ‘cookie dough’ scoop and place a small amount on top of your cracker.
