Sweet Sunday: Greyston Brownies

Greyston Bakery has 3 delicious brownie flavors: Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Snickerdoodle Blondie and Brown Sugar Blondie. I would bet that most if not all of my readers have tasted their brownies before! Why? Their brownies are in a variety of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors including Half Baked, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and their newest flavor Brownie Batter Core. Greyston Bakery has a very unique hiring policy: through their Open Hiring model, they enable job opportunities for people with barriers to employment while bringing together the resources needed to succeed in the workplace and to thrive in the community. The company was founded in 1982 by a Zen Buddhist Monk, Bernie Glassman. He realized there was a homeless epidemic and wanted to offer those people a job, no questions asked, and taught them how to bake.

It is truly a revolutionary, inclusive hiring policy. I discovered this baking company at the Summer Fancy Food Show 2016. Their brownies are delicious, and high quality. My favorite is their Brown Sugar Blondie.

As soon as a position is available, the people are called back for training that had put their name on a list. People with minimal education experience, homeless, do not speak English, or have been incarcerated. The company believes that people need a job to succeed in their community. To assist their employees, Greyston provides an early childcare center, job training and job placement for in-demand fields, a community garden program, and leadership programs.

Early on, the Founder met with Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry’s. The company has grown tremendously with their support. 30,000 pounds of brownies are made just for Ben & Jerry’s per day.

The success rate is a 30% graduation rate from the apprenticeship program. It is a 6-10 month paid training program. After that, the success rate is high, and people tend stay with the company. Many employees have been with the company 12-14 years. Greyston is very family oriented, employees know each other from the neighborhood and have been through a lot together. There is a strong sense of gratitude among the employees for the opportunities given to them. The company employees 75 bakers. The company is encouraging other business to adopt a similar hiring policy.
