SLATE Wine Bar + Bistro

SLATE Wine Bar and Bistro

If you were to imagine the perfect spot to bring that special someone for a quiet afternoon in between visiting the national parks and museums whilst visiting Washington D.C., Slate Wine Bar + Bistro would fit that description superlatively. Located in Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. just north of Georgetown, the restaurant boasts a cozy, friendly environment with a classy, top-notch menu with some of the most exceptional wine pairings you can experience.

Become immersed in sumptuous Mediterranean cuisine with a Spanish and Portuguese influence. Chef and Head Sommelier, Danny Lledó, has more than a decade of experience in the restaurant industry and wine making. His expertise was so apparent throughout our meal.

Each dish we savored in presented appropriately bold flavors and encompassed fresh, seasonal ingredients. The wine flights for each plate were masterful and took our dining experience to new and unexpected levels. To start, we had the Cheese Platter ($18) featuring Manchego, St. Stephen, and Prufrock. The cheese was served with baguette slices and diced candied fruit to cleanse the palate. Our first wine flight consisted of four wines: 2014 Soléna Pinot Noir, 2014 Barbera D’Asti, 2013 Primitivo del Salento D&N, and 2014 Napa Valley Arabella Cabernet Sauvignon. The pairing was according to cheese, from left to right: the stronger cheeses with tannic wines, down to the more subtle, fruitier wines with the creamier cheese.

Our second course was the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Benedict: two poached eggs, hollandaise, crab cakes, and home fries ($20). Our second flight of wine was as follows: Pfalz 2014 Forster Bischofsgarten Reisling, Verdicchio 2014, La Val Albarino 2015, and Bourgogne 2014 Chardonnay. The wine tasting ranged starting from dry to fruity and featured Italian and Spanish wines. Our main course was their signature, award-winning Seafood Paella: Shrimp, Mussels, Clams, Calamari, and Bomba Rice ($26), available on their dinner menu. The paella was our favorite: plated table-side and garnished with a fresh sprig of rosemary. The pungent, fresh flavors were so distinct, we could still reminisce about them more than three weeks later.
