Specialty Food Friday: TigerNut by Organic Gemini

Specialty Food Friday: TigerNut by Organic Gemini

About a month ago at an event in Southampton, I discovered a company called Organic Gemini. Based in Brooklyn, Organic Gemini sells a variety of paleo raw snacks, smoothie mixes, flour, oil, and Horchata made from TigerNuts. What is a TigerNut?

TigerNuts are not nuts, but actually tubers, small root vegetables, which comprised up to 80% of our Paleo ancestors’ diet around 2 million years ago. This ancient superfood originates from Northern Africa and the Mediterranean and has impressive health benefits. TigerNuts are the #1 whole food source of prebiotic fiber that resists digestion and helps our bodies to naturally develop probiotic bacteria.  One ounce of TigerNuts has 40% of our daily-recommended fiber and TigerNuts contain as much potassium as coconut water, hydrating our bodies even more than water does while simultaneously reducing our food cravings due to their high level of nutrients. TigerNuts also have as much iron as red meat and spinach.

I had the opportunity to try their full line of TigerNut Horchata, their smoothie mixes, raw granola, and tigernut flour. Horchata originated in Valencia, Spain in the 13th century. The company currently sells eight varieties of Horchata.

The Founders of Organic Gemini are Mariam Kinkladze and George Papanastasatos. When Kinkladze was28, her doctor discovered an ovarian cyst. Papanastasatos persuaded her to try a holistic treatment first and reserve invasive surgery for the final alternative. After enlisting the help of a holistic doctor and beginning a diet restricted to food that was raw, organic, Non-GMO, gluten-free, and dairy-free, the ovarian cyst has completely disappeared. From this incredible journey, the founders created a food company that is organic and has not been genetically modified.

Purchase their products online via their website, at King Kullen, or on Amazon, and Jet.com. My favorite Horchata was the Chai (my second favorite was banana) and my favorite granola was banana cacao! Currently, their website is offering free shipping on orders over $70 (excluding Horchata).
