2017 was very generous when it came to how many sensational, memorable plates I enjoyed. It was quite tough to narrow it down to just ten but there is no doubt you will enjoy these as well. From a wood fired pizza I came back for at least five times to a homemade autumn-inspired lasagna, here are my ten Best Things I Ate in 2017.
Sesame Crusted Salmon, Buoy One
Buoy One in Westhampton knows how to get it right with cooking the best piece of salmon I have had in a while. Thankfully, they have a seafood market minutes from my home! This dish is one I would order every single time I come in to dine. And never leave Buoy One without at least one bottle of Chef Dave’s Thai Glaze, a customer favorite!
Gulab Jamun, Saaz Indian Restaurant
My first time trying this traditional Indian dessert and I have been craving it ever since late October. Gulab Jamun is served hot and is a creation of spongy milky balls soaked in rose scented syrup with an essence of cardamom. I already planned on coming back to Saaz for my birthday next month, I am hooked!
Autumn Harvest Lasagna, Homemade
My own creation and one family and friends request I make during the autumn and winter months. This lasagna, which is very easy to make, is a twist on your traditional Italian lasagna. Mine is made with ground turkey, Havarti, Mascarpone, squash, and your favorite pumpkin/butternut squash pasta sauce. Garnish with sprigs of rosemary and sage. The aromas are so comforting. I have already received dozens of messages with positive feedback, thank you so much everyone!
Chilled Maine Lobster & Corn Soup, The North Fork Table & Inn
If I could recommend you visit only one restaurant on the North Fork, it would be The North Fork Table & Inn. The freshness in each taste of this soup is unsurpassed by anything I have tasted in a very long time. Poured table-side, the Lobster & Corn Soup is made with Crème Fraîche, and Soured Blueberry.
Summer Truffle & Ricotta Cavatelli, The North Fork Table & Inn
A double for this award-wining restaurant on the North Fork! Made with Parmigiano Reggiano and chive, the aromas and textures were so earthy and the plate so countrified, a perfect nod to the North Fork bounty. Their menu changes seasonally, so come in as soon as you can! Executive Chef Stephan Bogardus is the master at creating memorable dishes you would rarely find anywhere else.
Trufata Wood Fire Pizza, Lulu Kitchen & Bar
I could eat this Trufata Wood Fire Pizza everyday! Crafted with Stracciatella cheese, wild mushrooms, arugula, and truffle oil, it is a must have when at Lulu, especially with its with its finely shaved aromatic mushrooms.
Insatiable Eats / Manna Restaurant & Bar
Served at this year’s A Hamptons Happening in honor of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, which event earned two spots on our list this year, is Manna’s Summer Risotto with Saffron & Peas by Chef Marco Barrila. The succulent, noteworthy flavors were calling my name and I loved that this was vegetarian. These plates went very quickly and of course I went back for seconds (and thirds)!
Kreuther Handcrafted Chocolate, 13th Annual A Hamptons Happening to benefit the SWCRF
I have been dreaming about these chocolates ever since I had them this summer. Their table featured an array of gourmet chocolates, caramels, macarons, and more by Chef Gabriel Kreuther. I cannot praise Chef Kreuther enough! I will be ordering boxes from them throughout 2018 and beyond!
Filet Mignon, Montauk Yacht Club’s Coast Kitchen
The Charred 8oz Filet Mignon: smoked cheddar grit cake, succotash vegetables, fried blue point oysters, hollandaise sauce by Executive Chef Richard Hebson was the best I had in a very long time. It sliced like butter. The amount of flavors and textures packed into this dish is just so exquisite. You won’t experience anything like this anywhere else.
Pomme Frites, Swallow East
Their Hand Cut Fries with rosemary and thyme aioli are made freshly daily and are some of the best fries I have ever tasted. Come to Swallow East in Montauk for awesome live music and views of Montauk’s harbor and marina during the in-season. They also have the original sister restaurant in Huntington.
