With summer sun and fun on my mind, I recently sat down with Dr. Kenneth Mark, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs’ skin cancer surgeon, who has offices in the Hamptons, Manhattan and Aspen. Dr. Mark is an expert in all things skincare and offers a wide range of services to his patients, including chemical peels, CoolSculpting, microdermabrasion, IPL photo facials and laser hair removal. He is a nationally-recognized injectables expert, who specializes in BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers such as JUVÉDERM® and VOLUMA®.
Below, he shares his tips on this season’s top skincare, best practices for sun safety, and of course, his favorite Hamptons spots.
What are your best practices for staying safe in the sun while also obtaining sun-kissed, radiant skin?
Sun-kissed, radiant skin’ is a bit of an oxymoron! Exposure to the sun causes tanning or hyperpigmentation, clogged pores, blotchy pigment, inflammation, redness and an overall more dull complexion. ‘Radiant’ skin, by definition, is that which reflects light better. The key is to AVOID tanning and excess sun exposure. So when you’re enjoying all the East End has to offer, wear a hat, sunglasses, and SPF of 40 and above.
What are your most recommended summer procedures that require little to no downtime?
Some of my top recommended procedures are non-ablative laser facials specifically with the LASE MD to tone your skin to glow with no downtime, in-office medical grade chemical peels, microdermabrasion with hydrating wands and Ultherapy.
How about for those who are younger?
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion for exfoliation, especially for those prone to break-outs and clogged pores. I am witnessing a significant increase in younger patients seeking Botox for preventive purposes as well.
How about for those who are over 50?
The most significant improvement for over 50 with no downtime is Ultherapy – the only non-surgical procedure cleared by the FDA to ‘LIFT’ the skin non-surgically. Christie Brinkley is the face of the brand! Need I say more?! Fillers, especially Voluma to lift, re-shape and sculpt the face produces immediate results with no downtime.
What are your thoughts on the latest Hamptons treatment trends? I, for example, have always wanted to try CoolSculpting but am concerned if it is worth the investment. What do you advise?
Coolsculpting has become so popular in my office that I am one of the busiest practices on all of Long Island with it. It has a safe, proven track record, is totally NON-invasive and patients love the results. In the past year, I have seen interest in it spike tremendously. For example, patients who did for their love handles got great results and come back to do outer thighs. It is becoming so popular I have patients coming in for group consults. They have heard about it, talk about it, research it, then come in together!
Speaking of the Hamptons, describe your perfect day on the East End.
In the morning, I’d go for a run by the swans at the golf course to the Peconic Bay, then do an exercise class in my backyard led by my beautiful HIIT instructor/wife. Afterward, I’d enjoy swimming in the ocean and go back home for some “Entourage,” my new favorite Rosé that’s made by friends of mine. For dinner, I’d have a home cooked meal al fresco in our garden – either grilled by me or, when fortunate enough, cooked by Michelin chef and friend, Kurt Gutenbrunner.
And of course, where are your favorite spots to eat?
Tutto il Giorno in Southampton for its consistent food, service, vibe, and friendships with Vlad (manager), Cris (excellent bartender), and most of the staff. I’m also frequently seen at 75 Main for its energy, chopped salad, watermelon/feta salad, steak, and Zach (owner and friend) always making me feel at home, for years now.
