The Backyard Restaurant at Solé East in Montauk is a must visit for locals and visitors who wish to kick back, relax, and enjoy an incredible dinner poolside while listening to singer and guitarist Annie Trezza, who played from 6-9pm. You could easily sit outside (or inside) for hours enjoying a cocktail and your meal while taking breaks from the table playing backyard games and browsing their onsite boutique beach shop, Nibi MTK. It is the perfect spot for the entire family. My daughter loved exploring the property, listening to the live band, and eating dinner with me and my husband. It is rare that a hotel and restaurant offers so much for their guests and is ideally located within minutes of Montauk’s village and the Atlantic Ocean beaches. There is a convenient pathway that will take you right in to town if you wish not to drive.
This past Tuesday’s visit was our first for the season. After arriving early just before 5:30pm, we sat outside at one of their square tables with a perfect viewing point of the live band. We started off with their signature House Cocktail: Hot-Tauk, a mix of Herradura Tequila, Lime, Strawberry, Jalapeño, Cointreau, with a Spicy Salt Rim ($16), their most popular poolside cocktail.
We started with the Backyard Clam Chowder: Littleneck Clams, Yukon Potatoes, Leeks, Apple Wood Smoked Bacon, Parsley ($12); and the Burrata: Blistered Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil, Tapenade Crostini ($20). Additional options from the Cichetti (small plates) menu that caught our attention were the Avocado Toast with Curry Yogurt, Baby Kale, Quinoa, Seven Grain Toast ($17); and the Yellow Cab Tomato Gazpacho: Lobster Meat and Avocado ($14). The chowder was rich, creamy, with generous amounts of smoked bacon. The Burrata was the ideal portion and is always a favorite cheese of mine to order. I must also note the bread served with our appetizers is the best in Montauk. We loved the fresh, roasted garlic with thyme and balsamic drizzle.
Next, were our main courses. We chose two dishes from the Simply Grilled category. Mine was the Wild Striped Bass from Montauk with North Fork Roasted Potatoes with Rosemary ($38). My husband had the Monkfish from Montauk with Creamy Polenta, Parmesan, and Truffle Oil ($36). Each Simply Grilled Dish comes with a choice of one side. Additional sides include Steamed Bok Choy, Broccoli Rabe, and Roasted Baby Carrots with Honey and Thyme. The Monkfish was light, fluffy and buttery and paired beautifully with the polenta. My Striped Bass was also excellent, the North Fork potatoes were spot on and superbly seasoned and roasted.
This is one of those sensational spots where desserts should not be missed. In fact, this time it was the centerpiece of our dining experience. We once again had our favorite Flourless Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream garnished with fresh mint ($10); and we had their Lavender Crème Brûlée: Pistachio and Almond Cookie ($10). The chocolate cake is so dense and chocolatey, have a look at the last photo above to see for yourself! A perfect dessert offering on the menu is their Backyard S’more Kit: Hershey’s Chocolate Bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Marshmallows, Graham Crackers ($18). How fun does this sound?! I would suggest ordering the S’mores to share amongst at least three dining guests. It would have been to indulgent for us, but we are coming back for that one within the month.
