Rich Farm Ice Cream

Rich Farm Ice Cream dairy farm and ice cream shop is renowned across Connecticut. This ‘Dairy Farm of Distinction’ has been maintained by the same family since the 1950’s. Rich Dairy became a creamery in the mid-1990s and quickly amassed a cult following for their ice cream. Connecticut residents cannot drive within a ten-mile radius of Oxford, CT without making a pit stop at Rich Farm. Rich Farm is a working dairy farm, and children delight in visiting the cows while waiting in the consistently long line to get their ice cream.

History & Locations

What started as a small, little known location has grown to something of famed proportion. The creamery is so busy, lot attendants must be employed to help the masses park safely in the field. Rich Farm has also franchised. In addition to the original location in Oxford, CT, has locations in Brookfield, CT, Bristol, CT and Placentia, CA. Despite these changes and unprecedented growth, the ice cream is still made the same way it was nearly 30 years ago. It is made every day by hand on the premises in small batches.

Ice Cream Creations

From simple cups of vanilla soft serve to wacky limited availability flavors, Rich Dairy has something for everyone. Try the hot apple cider doughnut sundae a true farmhouse treat. They also offer Ice Cream Cannoli and Ice Cream Pies. Rich Farm also offers frozen Greek yogurt and no sugar added flavors. Other treats served include ice cream sandwiches, ice cream cakes, soda floats, and a superb soft serve and candy mashup known as a Razzle.

Whether you have fond memories of visiting Rich Dairy as a kid or are looking to create a new family tradition, this creamery is a stop you need to make this season.

Rich Farm is currently open seven days a week from 11:30am-9pm. Cash only.

Ferris Acres Creamery

The excitement and anticipation surrounding a double scoop ice cream in a waffle cone or a sundae with all the toppings is one of few things that transcends the process of “growing up”. I was every bit as excited as the children in line beside me to taste my first bite of farm-fresh Ferris Acres ice cream. Ferris Acres has earned status as a Dairy Farm of Distinction in Connecticut, and for good reason. This dairy farm makes every batch of ice cream in-house using only the freshest seasonal ingredients. The best part? You get to enjoy your treat mere feet from where it was produced on a bucolic farm in the Fairfield County town of Newtown, CT.

Ferris Acres Creamery farm is known for its inventive and unexpected flavor combinations when creating their superb ice cream. Yes, you can still get a cone of mint-chip or vanilla, but if you care to expand your horizons try such novel favorites as Elvis Dream, vanilla ice cream with peanut butter, banana slices, and chocolate chunks or a dessert translated into frozen dairy form: Blueberry Cheesecake ice cream with fresh blueberry swirls and real cheesecake pieces. Cones not your thing? Try an ice cream cookie sandwich with your choice of flavor between two enormous fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies, a milkshake, or one of their signature sundaes.

Ferris Acres also offers made-to-order ice cream cakes, ice cream pies, and is unique to Fairfield County in being the only establishment to offer ice cream cupcakes. While 72 hours notice is required for custom cakes, Ferris Acres also keeps a grab-and-go stash of ice cream cakes, pies, and cupcakes readily available in the freezer for happy guests to bring home with them. The landscape is beautiful, and there are ample places to sit and watch the cows graze in the fields across the street, blissfully unaware of how happy the fruits of their labor have made us.

Fall hours are currently in effect at Ferris Acres Creamery: Monday-Saturday from11:30am-9pm, and Sunday from 11:30am-6pm.

PB & J Caterpillars

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #MorethanPBandJ #CollectiveBias

Are you looking for a new and innovative way to create the perfect lunch for your child? These delicious and colorful PB and J Caterpillars are a perfect way to brighten your child’s day. It is simple, easy, and loads of fun to make at home. As the holiday break comes to a close, parents begin to think of creative lunch ideas for their children to bring to school. Our family especially loves PB and J sandwiches. It has been my and my husband’s favorite sandwich our entire lives. I remember watching a preschool video that taught me how to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I would then make the sandwiches for everyone in my family as I was so proud of the skills I learned.

We always make our PB and J sandwiches with Jif and Smucker’s. Jif Creamy Peanut Butter is our favorite paired with Smucker’s Seedless Strawberry Jam. Smucker’s has the perfect touch of sweetness because it is made with real fruit, and Jif’s smooth and creamy texture has that comforting taste of freshly roasted peanuts. Smucker’s Seedless Strawberry Jam has an unforgettable, velvety texture that is so ideal for spreading on bread. Both Jif and Smucker’s have that great taste kids will love and it is a taste I have adored since my childhood. I always save a little spoonful of Jif and Smucker’s for after I am done making the sandwiches. It is irresistibly satisfying!

I found both Jif and Smucker’s products in aisle 14 of my local ShopRite. After my purchase, I came home and thought of a brand new recipe that my daughter will fall in love with as a new school lunch. Her school’s curriculum focuses on the farm animals and the outdoors, so I wanted to incorporate a way she could connect what she learns at school to her school lunch. Extending past the ‘traditional sandwich’, I created PB and J Caterpillars made with fresh fruit.

This recipe is such a blast to make and your kids can join in on the fun as well. It takes less than 15 minutes prepare. Have fun by choosing your favorite fruit and you can even incorporate cubes of yellow and white cheese. For these, I used strawberries, pineapple, mandarin oranges, blueberries, banana slices, and grapes. You can mix it up with different shapes, colors, and textures for even more variety, choosing fruit that is in season. I used standard kebab skewers, cut them in half to create six-inch skewers. I also used standard toothpicks, cut into three pieces each, for the ‘antennas’.

Please note, depending how old your child is, I understand that you would rather not use skewers/have them be brought to school. Instead, you can arrange the fruit tightly together in a plastic container and place pretzels or raisins on the sides to resemble the ground. As an alternative to the toothpicks, place two small dabs of peanut butter on the sliced banana to place the blueberries, and have the blueberries resemble eyes instead of antennas.

Allow 15-20 minutes for prep work and assembling.

After navigating this year’s Summer Fancy Food Show in Manhattan to scouting the newsletters from the specialty food trade and researching trends, I learned of several great new brands that I now enjoy on a regular basis. Stonyfield® Organic YoKids®

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Stonyfield® Organic YoKids®.

Where will you be headed this weekend? Bring Stonyfield® Organic YoKids® along for the journey! Their line of delicious, organic yogurts is ideal for car trips, pumpkin and apple picking adventures, the playground, hiking, and many more destinations. We have already begun enjoying YoKids® as a healthy after school snack. As the #1 organic kids yogurt brand, it came as no surprise when I found their entire selection of whole milk yogurt pouches sold out at my local grocery store. I was lucky to come back the next day to see their selection of pouches fully restocked. I also picked up their 6 pack of 4 oz yogurt cups and 2oz 8-pack of strawberry banana sque`ezers.

There is also exciting news for parents, children, and yogurt lovers of all ages! Stonyfield recently announced a sugar reduction across its yogurt portfolio. This reduction started with YoKids®, which features between 25% – 40% less sugar than the leading kids’ yogurt. Children already consume enough sugar (many of which is added and hidden in various foods). One of my goals as a parent is to make sure my daughter gets the proper amount of daily nutrition all while having fun and enjoying what she eats. This is so she has the opportunity to establish healthy eating habits early on and maintain them for life.

Sweet Sunday: Gemelli Gelato

Last Saturday, I visited Gemelli Gelato for the first time in Hampton Bays, located just off of Montauk Highway. There are many unique characteristics about this gelato shop that everyone will love: the array of unique, artisanal gelato flavors, nitro brew coffee, specialty waffle cones, and plenty of outdoor space for families to run about and play. Very few businesses offer such an incredible amount of ‘play’ space, while also serving some of the best gelato in the Hamptons!

Joel’s Outrageous Cookie Dough

I discovered a fun, all natural gourmet cookie dough at this year’s Summer Fancy Food Show that should be on the top of everyone’s gift list this autumn and upcoming holiday season. Joel’s Outrageous Cookie Dough graciously sent me their Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk and Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough to bake at home and enjoy amongst family and friends. The cookies were so much fun and very simple to bake. After storing in the freezer, we thawed the cookie dough for a half hour, broke away each of the twelve square pieces and baked them in the oven on 325 degrees for exactly 14 minutes.
