In addition to our visit to Ralph’s Italian Ice, we also wanted to eat dinner in Greenport during our day-long visit instead of eating when we got back to the South Fork. We chose to eat at Claudio’s Crabby Jerry’s, a casual eatery right on the harbor with breathtaking views of Shelter Island across the way and of the boats passing by. I love Greenport’s seaside harbor, especially when they bring in the tall ships every summer.
When we arrived, there were plenty of tables to sit at and the line to order our food was not too long (about five parties ahead of us). We had plenty of room to for the stroller and we were able to get a table with a perfect view of the marina. We were surprised initially that the place was not as crowded as we expected for dinner, but we assumed too soon; after five minutes of sitting down and eating our meals, a wave of customers flowed in to the eatery, creating a line of at least twenty or so hungry individuals. That was at 5:20 pm.
A few of us in the party ordered the lobster salad roll, and my husband ordered the Crabby’s crab cake sandwich; each came with a side of bagged potato chips, pickles, and cole slaw. My husband liked his crab cake and added some Tabasco sauce (not that much flavor otherwise). We also ordered a side of french fries. I thought the cole slaw was really good and the lobster meat was excellent, I loved the large chunks of lobster. I could have done without the roll itself because I only had a few bites of it. It would have been nice to have the bun toasted but understand that it is a self-serve restaurant. For the potato chips, I would for some reason have loved the potato chips with the ridges. We ended up bringing our chips home. Have a look at their menu here.
For next time, I would try their peel and eat shrimp under appetizers, and their New England Clam Chowder which I noticed a few customers eating around us. The meal was not exactly incredible but it was satisfying after a long day of walking around. I bet there are many other excellent seafood eateries in the area that are worth trying.
