Dinner at Fresh Hamptons

Editor’s note: this restaurant has closed

This was my and my husband’s first visit to Fresh Hamptons in Bridgehampton, owned by Todd Jacobs, who is also the restaurant’s Executive Chef. We brought our daughter, Sarah, along with us and were pleased to see that there was plenty of room for the stroller in the spacious dining area. The hostess greeted and seated us promptly at a table close to the booths in the back of the restaurant. The restaurant is currently in its second year of business, opening in 2013. Inside, you will notice a laid-back, rustic interior, with vibrant Buddha paintings and peaceful landscape photography prints adorning the wall.

What is particularly unique about this restaurant is that it offers individual, duo, and family style dining options. For example, you could order a quarter, half or one pound portion of fish or beef, depending upon how many people are in your party and how hungry you are. It gives each dinner guest the opportunity to try a variety of dishes. Each entree is a la carte, which gives you the option of pairing different sides with your meal. There is a lot of freedom with your dinner choices, which I always love.

To start off our meal, my husband ordered a glass of their house chardonnay, and I went for the Fresh Lemonade: Cayenne Infused Fresh Squeezed Lemonade & Muddled Mint ($7). The cayenne was a soothing precedent to the refreshing and slightly sweetened taste of the lemonade. The fresh mint was a lovely touch.

It was “Taco Tuesday” so my husband decided to order from that separate menu, seen above. For $22 per adult ($12 per child under 12), he chose the Adobe Chicken as his meat filling. The tortillas were fresh, the chicken had a taste of fennel, and the hot spices had a touch of cilantro.

I tried two dinners, both as a single serving portion. The first was the Hemp Flour Crusted Flounder: Organic Carrot Butter Infused with Ginger & Lemongrass ($17), and the second was All Natural Boneless Beef Short Ribs Braised with Five Spice & Merlot Wine ($18). For sides, I had two small portions ($7/8, respectively) of the Organic Collard Greens, Swiss Chard, & Kale Sautéed with Garlic & Olive Oil; and Crisp Local Organic Corn & Parsnip Polenta with Organic Tomato Sauce. The boneless beef short ribs dish was very earthy with the infusion of fresh rosemary. I loved the carrot butter served with the tender and deliciously flaky flounder. The leafy green vegetables tasted so fresh and the kale was not overdone. The polenta was a real treat; I have never tasted anything quite like that before. Each of our dinner selections was very wholesome and satisfying. You can taste the dedication and effort that is put into cooking and preparing each dish. All in all, it was a very nourishing, mood-building meal.

For dessert, we tried three: the Organic Berries with Vegan Coconut Whipped Cream ($12) that is also on their small plates menu, Classic Crème Brûlée ($6), and Warm Organic Apple Crisp with Ginger Ice Cream ($8). Lately, I have had such a hankering for crème brûlée, I am not sure what it is! It tasted so amazing that I couldn’t believe how quickly I devoured it after my hearty meal. The Ginger Ice Cream was smooth, refreshing, and very unique. I would come back over and over again for the berries with coconut whipped cream. It was a fruity, light and delicately sweet way to end the meal.

Other menu items that jumped out at me included the Pan Seared Organic Scottish Salmon on their dinner menu, and the Pan Seared Local Sea Scallops on their specials menu.

Fresh herbs and spices grown on the premises include cilantro, fennel, mint, oregano, and rosemary. Produce grown in the front garden rotate seasonally, with strawberries at its peak for two weeks in June, for example.
