Hamptons native, Brittany Torres, launched HAMPTONS Handpoured in March of this year and is quickly growing in popularity. Her handcrafted candle line includes four candles: SOUTHAMPTON, BRIDGEHAMPTON, WESTHAMPTON, AND EAST HAMPTON. “I’ve been making candles recreationally for over a year so I had a starting point of what oils I preferred to use and what blends I wanted to try, especially for my Village Series,” explains Torres. “But, it still took me about twenty trials for each scent because I wanted to get the ideal blends of the notes for each candle. I also had to test burning time, color, and scent throw.”
Torres derived each scent for the Hamptons based on what notes I personally believe tell the story of each Village. “It provides my customers to ‘Take a piece of the Hamptons home with them!’ An example would be The EAST HAMPTON that has notes of Cashmere, Fig, and Strawberry. The term Cashmere to describe my blended fragrance showcases the luxury that lines the streets of the village, and the Strawberry & Fig remind me of the lovely farms and natural markets.
Torres goes on to describe the process of making candles by hand. “It is a very delicate process. You must first prep your containers by cleaning and cotton wicking. I measure out the all natural soy wax using a food scale and begin melting using a kettle only big enough to hold a small batch of candles. You melt it to a particular temperature, stir in your fragrance, and pour into your vessel. Curing takes 12-24 hours. After they set the wicks are trimmed, labels are applied by hand, and they are out for delivery,” explains Torres.
Torres sells her candles in ten retail shops across the East End, with most shops located in Southampton. She intends to launch her Etsy store mid summer as she wishes to form proper relationships with my retail partners and support local business out on the East End. “I will offer gift sets of candles on my website and on Etsy as well as taking custom orders big and small,” explains Torres.
HAMPTONS Handpoured is the perfect incorporation into Hamptons events and parties. “They are a nice welcoming touch to any entry way or as a centerpiece of a table setting. They also add a bit of ambiance on a dimly lit evening or beautiful fragrance in your powder room! The candles also make hostess gifts at parties as well as add a local and luxurious touch in party favor bags.” A main effort that HAMPTONS Handpoured is striving to continue is support and be supported by local businesses. Many candles are donated as auction gifts for great charities, and fundraisers.
On July 3rd, Torres will debut her Water Mill Candle. “It is a trunk show in the West Elm Watermill. West Elm is a store that support local artisans. I [also] will be raffling off one of the Water Mill candles,” says Torres. HAMPTONS Handpoured will also be featured at ArtHamptons in the VIP section at the opening party, as well as at Farmers Markets and craft fairs throughout the summer.
