Lullanest is a baby and toddler boutique in the Village of East Hampton that celebrates both young children and parenthood. The storefront originally opened in the spring of 2014 and has already hosted a number of events for moms-to-be and new mother’s, with many more to come this summer. When I met owner Katerina Williams and her husband, Robert, for the first time last May, I knew that this would a place I would visit for safe and innovative baby products, but also for expert advice from her trained staff who truly care about each item they recommend.
This past Friday, June 19th, Lullanest hosted Cathy Alba, daughter of Jessica who co-founded The Honest Company. which sells a long line of safe, eco-friendly baby and family products from diapers and wipes to laundry detergent and all purpose cleaner. Store patrons learned about the company and enjoyed samples from The Honest Company. The event was catered by Mary’s Marvelous.
I recently sat down with Williams, where we discussed parenthood, favorite gift items sold at Lullanest, and child-friendly activities and eateries in New York City and in the Hamptons.
What are your favorite activities for children in the Hamptons? In NYC?
My older son is turning 3 this summer and he’s old enough now to really enjoy the farms on the East End. He absolutely adores The Art Farm. He’s an incredibly enthusiastic Farmer Helper, unafraid of feeding any of the farm animals or collecting eggs. We’ve enjoyed Super Soccer Stars and Goat on a Boat, both in Sag Harbor. One of my favorite parts of coming out East is just enjoying being together, losing track of time and endlessly playing in the grass, the beach or at home. In NYC, we tend to stay downtown and love Chelsea Piers, Imagine Swim, Music for Aardvarks, and the amazing playgrounds along Hudson River Park, Tribeca and Battery Park.
How have your sons given you inspiration for developing Lullanest?
A surprising part of motherhood for me is the immediate connection I felt to other parents once I became a parent. By becoming a mother to my sons, I found this deep sympathy and compassion for other parents and an instinct to protect children who are not my own. This instinct compelled me to create Lullanest as a way to share with other new parents information about quality baby products, what I’ve discovered to be safer and effective options.
What activities do you wish the Hamptons offered for children?
Year round indoor swim lessons! Every child should be taught swim basics as early as possible. It’s a life skill. So many properties here have pools and the youngest are the most at risk of accidental injury.
Will you be having any children’s clothing trunk shows at Lullanest in the near future?
Yes! Stay tuned!
What sorts of community classes will you be offering?
I took an infant CPR class while pregnant with Sebastian and found it comforting and empowering. I’d love a refresher and think it would be a great skill to make available to other local parents. We are are working to bring it to Lullanest.
What are your three favorite items that you sell in your store?
I have a special place for the Moulin Roty Lion. I’ve watched “Lion” bring countless smiles to my son’s face and I hope he and the other enchanting Moulin Roty toys bring similar smiles to other families. I love the Baby Bjorn Bouncer. It’s classic- simple and effective. A also love anything Aden and Anais and find their products useful and attractive. The soft, breathable muslin weave and adorable patterns have been a longstanding favorite of mine.
You and your husband clearly do such a fantastic job with the job, including the products you sell and its design. Describe how you have worked together creating Lullanest and choosing the space for the shop.
Thank you! It’s been quite a ride. The experience of opening a boutique simultaneously with the arrival of our youngest has been humbling. Robert is my biggest supporter and the best sound board. We are partners in all we do and I feel lucky to have such a smart, thoughtful person offering sincere feedback. We both fell in love immediately with the space for Lullanest. We walked in, looked at each other and knew it was “the one”. We made the decision on the spot!
What are your three favorite restaurants in the Hamptons?
The Blue Parrot is fun and delicious. LT is of course a favorite for us with kids, and Tutto Il Giorno in Sag Harbor is perfect year round.
