Rowdy Hall has always been the go-to restaurant for lunch for my family and I for many years. If you do not know where the restaurant is located it can be very difficult to find. However, as soon as you see London Jewelers on Main Street in the Village of East Hampton, you know you are in the right place. Rowdy Hall is located just to the side of London Jewelers in an alcove, with the single-door entrance at the end of a short, cozy alleyway. The crowd was just beginning to grow as my husband, myself and a few friends arrived at around 12:10pm. There were already some families seated and enjoying their drinks when we sat down. Our waitress was very pleasant; she was prompt with our orders and came over multiple times to ask how we were doing and brought us extra napkins and ketchup during our lunch hour.
To drink, I tried their Mrs. Apple signature cocktail: Tito’s Vodka, Calvados, Local Apple Cider Served Up with a Cinnamon-Sugar Rim & Apple Chip ($13). The drink was very smooth, and a bit strong for my taste, but I loved the tang of the apple cider. Their hot apple cider is a fantastic non-alcoholic choice. It is worth a try.
We wanted to try a few items off the menu and ended up sharing our snack items across the table, and tasting each other’s entrees. From the snack menu, upon recommendation from our waitress, we ordered the Crispy Eggplant Fries with spicy tomato sauce ($5), the Rowdy Buffalo Style Chicken Wings ($10) and the Spicy Butternut Hummus with Grilled Flatbread ($5). Another my favorite snack of mine there is the Steamed Pork Buns for $7.50. The waitress was spot-on. The spiciness of the hummus added a zing of flavor to each bite, and the flatbread was warm, slightly soft and perfect for dipping and spreading hummus on. We gobbled up the eggplant fries. Crispy on the outside, and I loved that they were not greasy. The wings were very tasty and the side of carrots is always a nice touch. The blue cheese dressing was cooling and refreshing. We always love to order wings when we go out as we can’t make them at home.
For lunch, my husband ordered the new Short Rib Grilled Cheese: Braised Beef Short Rib, Gouda, Caramelized Onions & Horseradish Sauce on Pain de Mie, served with Green Apple Slaw ($18), I ordered the Vegetarian Chili: Cheddar Cheese, Chopped Red Onion, Sour Cream Served with House-Made Cornbread ($16), one friend ordered the Rowdy Burger ($14.50) with fried onions and no cheese with a side hand-cut French fries, and another one of us ordered the Reuben Sandwich, which was the special sandwich of the day. We also ordered a side order of fries for the table.
Their fries are, in my opinion, the best in The Hamptons! You must try them for yourself! The chili is very filling and my favorite lunch menu item. The burger was cooked well done and the fried onions were a terrific add-on. The Reuben was delicious with a generous portion of corned beef. We didn’t have any room for dessert, but be sure to try one at some point in time. I highly recommend the Banana Brownie Sundae ($9), it is my favorite. Their Chocolate Mousse for $8.50 is a great second choice!
The restaurant is a great local hangout during the summer months. The dining area and especially the bar area can become crowded, especially on the weekends in the summer, but the wait has never been overwhelming. Outdoor dining is an option during the warmer months. I prefer to eat inside.
Rowdy Hall is open seven days a week year round for lunch and dinner. Lunch is served from 12pm-3:30pm and dinner is served from 5pm-10pm Sunday-Thursday and on Friday and Saturday from 5pm-11pm. During the off-season they have what is called “Rowdy Readers,” which is a partnership with Bookhampton where a member of the bookstore staff comes in to discuss a particular book and or author while offering a 15% discount to Bookhampton for that book.
