Midtown Oyster Bar

Located on Thames Street in the heart of Newport’s harbor, Midtown Oyster boosts a warm, friendly atmosphere for dining for lunch and dinner year round. Ever since joining Newport’s bustling social scene in June of 2013, this tavern and restaurant has been a popular spot for their impressive raw bar selection, fresh seafood, and non-seafood selections such as steaks, burgers, and sandwiches for locals and visitors to the region.

Once we arrived on a Saturday afternoon at 12:30, the downstairs tavern had a significant amount of activity, with all of the bar stools occupied and the majority of the nearby tables filled with guests. The restaurant is a two story building with two bar areas, with the second floor as a Burgee Bar. There is a generous amount of dining space upstairs with plenty of room between tables, allowing for a private and relaxing dining experience.

To start, I must mention how friendly and sincere our waitress was. We never had to ask for any extra napkins or water, for example. She was very prompt and knew what we may need before we had the opportunity to ask. For drinks, I chose their specialty cocktail, The Malphy Crush: Malphy Lemon Gin, Muddled Lemons, Mint, Simple Syrup: $10. My husband had their draft Stella Artois.

For appetizers, we both split the Tuna Tartare Tacos: Pineapple-Tomatilla Salsa, Sweet Chili, Cilantro ($15), and the Char-Grilled Octopus (on the dinner menu): Charred with Spice Rub, Chickpea Salad, Leon ($18). The spice rub for the octopus was an Espellet, a Spanish spice rub.

Our entrees were the Maryland-Stle Crab Cake Melt: Open-Faced, Toasted English Muffin, Cheddar ($17); and the Fish Tacos: Blackened Mahi-Mahi-Mahi, Napa Slaw with Mango Chipotle Pepper Aioli, and Corn Flour Tortillas ($15).

For dessert with split their Bread Pudding with Dark Rum Sauce and Ginger Ice Cream.

Lunch specials for the day we dined in included Duck Tacos, Miso Marinated Chilean Sea Bass, and a Prosciutto Panini. The specials change daily.
