I made my first visit for lunch to Modern Snack Bar just a few, short days ago, and am already looking forward to my next visit. Located in the heart of Wine Country on the North Fork, Modern Snack Bar has been a landmark for delicious home cooking since 1950. Known for their famous mashed turnips, and decadent lemon meringue pie, this is one of the premier family-run restaurants on the East End to stop at for homey, American cuisine.
Our waitress was so warmhearted and genuine, which made for such a memorable lunch hour. My mom was with me and was sharing stories of how her father, my grandpa, used to come here for lunch on a regular basis more than thirty years ago when he worked in the area as a building contractor. He passed away this past November, and I have been thinking about him every single day. He always had great taste and I knew instantly why he frequented Modern Snack Bar. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the decor takes you back in time to when the establishment first opened.
Whenever I see an Egg Cream on the menu, you know I will be ordering it. It is my favorite, fun drink to order and I always order the Vanilla. My mom ordered their unsweetened iced tea. Soup specials of the day included New England Clam Chowder, Chicken Noodle, and Lobster Bisque. My mom ordered the clam chowder; I was undecided and ask our waitress for a recommendation. She right away suggested the Lobster Bisque, and she was right. It was the perfect portion, creamy, and delicious.
For our entrees, we ordered the Grilled Tuna Melt: chunk white tuna salad & swiss cheese, grilled on rye bread; served with cole slaw & pickle ($11.95), and the all time favorite Roast Turkey: oven roasted turkey served with stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce ($13.95), which includes a choice of potato & vegetable, and a bread basket. I opted out of the bread basket as I felt it would be too much food. My grandpa always ordered the roast turkey and I did not know that before I ordered. As my vegetable side I chose their notable mashed turnips, something I would not choose in most instances, but they were outstanding. The tuna salad was prepared perfectly, the bread was fresh and the cole slaw complimented the sandwich well. The Roast Turkey was an example of down home cooking at its best. I loved every single bite and would order this dish again and again.
We brought home two desserts: a slice of the Lemon Meringue Pie ($3.45) which tasted like “summer sunshine” (my mom’s quote), the meringue like a puffy cloud, and the Almond Cream Cake which was delightfully moist and delicate. All of their pies are made on the premises.
We had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Otto Wittmeier. Otto and his brother, John, own and operate Modern Snack Bar and the business has been in the family ever since its inception. He was so genial and made us feel at home. My mom and I look forward to coming back again soon.
Modern Snack Bar is open Tuesday thru Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-9pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am-10pm, and on Sunday from 12pm-9pm straight through each day for lunch and dinner. They have a luncheon special on Tuesday thru Friday from 11am-3pm.
