Spring may be ending with some wet weather, but that fact hasn’t keep east end businesses and their patrons from celebrating the harbinger events of summer. On Saturday May 4th, Holy Schmitt’s Horseradish and the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead hosted the annual North Fork Horseradish Festival. The Hallockville grounds quickly filled as visitors came to eat, shop, and explore the beautiful scenery of the Museum Farm.
Of course, the highlight of the Horseradish Festival was the tasting of Schmitt’s Family Farm’s famous Holy Schmitt’s Horseradish. Multiple varieties of the delicious spicy substance were offered including Original, Hot Pepper, and Cranberry. Also for sale were jars of Herbal Relish and Horseradish Pickles as well as Schmitt’s vibrantly-colored Bloody Mary mix. Guests lined up to brave the heat of each concoction and purchase their favorites.
For anyone seeking a milder food experience, several local restaurant and beverage vendors were also on site. Both the fresh oysters from Little Creek Oyster Co. in Greenport as well as the seafood offerings from Twin Forks catering paired well with Holy Schmitt’s Cocktail Sauce Horseradish. Meanwhile, Homeslice Wood-Fired Pizza and Catering from East Hampton
offered made-to-order custom pies baked right in their truck’s warm oven. South Fork Kitchens—a program of the Amagansett Food Institute—offered varieties of hot sauce and other spreads made with local ingredients to compliment any dish. For drinks, North Fork Brewing Co. had several beers on-tap.
While adults mingled and ate, children enjoyed bean bag toss games, played in the open space of Hallockville, and observed the Farm Museum’s beautiful cattle. Families also browsed
the craft stalls’ offerings, including the fine wooden creations of the Hallockville Carvers and the homemade beauty items from KISS Skincare located in the Northport area. Inside of Hallockville’s barn, Miss Ella’s Yarn and Gift Shop featured traditional Polish pottery as well as sewn items for sale, each artfully created and displayed.
Holy Schmitt’s Horseradish is available at Schmitt’s Family Farm on Sound Avenue in Riverhead. Following The North Fork Horseradish Festival, Hallockville will host many other exciting activities as the summer season begins. Come to Hallockville for a taste of genuine farming life, and head over to Schmitt’s for a taste of genuine horseradish that will add a kick to any dish.
