This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of doing a private wine tour and tasting at Pindar Vineyards, the largest and one of the oldest vineyards on Long Island. I enjoyed my tasting at their private VIP Bar opposite and away from the main tasting bar. This was my first visit to the sprawling winery on the North Fork. My experience was complete with a tour of the property, including getting to see the impressive production facility, and expansive barrel room. Notice the wind turbine in the photo gallery below that service as a power source for the vineyard. The customer service at Pindar is five stars across the board. Each staff member was very knowledgeable and hands on.
The VIP bar is especially ideal for intimate milestone celebrations, bachelorette parties, or anniversaries. Cheeses and snacks are available to purchase with your tasting. The vineyard throughout the year will host a number of events and gatherings, including chocolate and wine pairings, fundraisers, car shows, and more.
My Wine Tasting Menu, served in order of sweetness, followed by the red wines.
Limited Production ($3 per taste, refundable upon bottle purchase): Premier Cuvee ($24.99/bottle). Classic Brut, light and dry with pleasing floral aromas. Crafted in the traditional “method champenois” from 100% Chardonnay grapes.
White Wines & Dry Rose: 2015 Peacock Chardonnay ($12.99/bottle). There were notes of green apple, banana, and citrus rind. Finishes crisp with balanced acidity. As noted by the Pindar Team, this particular wine tastes a little sweeter this year.
Proprietary Blends: Winter White ($17.99 1.5 liter). Semi-dry (slightly sweet) white, exploding with fruit flavors. Crafted from Cayuga and Seyval grapes. My favorite wine! Very soft finish. Most popular wine choice.
On the Sweeter Side: 2014 Moscato ($12.99/bottle). Fresh floral aromas with flavors of orange, peach and apple. This wine tasted less sweet than expected, with prominent citrus notes. Third favorite.
On the Sweeter Side: 2014 Riesling ($14.99/bottle). Aromatic nuances of honey, peaches and apricot. Finishes off with a touch of sweet. Great pairing for Indian, spicy foods, and BBQ. This wine was just released and is my second favorite.
Red Wines: Pythagoras ($14.99/bottle). Bordeaux blend rich with berry notes and a very smooth finish. This wine is great with burgers, pasta, pizza or any hearty meal. It is very versatile, and a go-to red for entertaining.
On the Sweeter Side: Sweet Scarlet ($12.99/bottle). Rich with fruit flavors. Can be served chilled. Great as a Sangria and pairs well with grilled foods. A very romantic, smooth finish.
The labeling on the wine bottles are so beautiful and eye catching. The paintings are done by local artists in Jamesport and in Port Jefferson.
During my tour and tasting, Nice Buns Gourmet Food Truck was on premises serving their famous Slammin’ Sliders. Sample menu items include their Nice Buns Sliders: ground beef sliders with bacon, bleu cheese and crunchy fried onions; and the Lamb Sliders: seasoned ground lamb with cucumber and tzatziki sauce. They are a regular food truck that appears at the vineyard. We also got to hear some live music; live musical performances are Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5pm.
Wine tastings are $10 for your choice of five wines. Tasting Bar closes at 5:30pm; winery closes at 6pm. Multiple bottle purchase and case discounts available. For example, if you purchase one case or twelve bottles or more, you receive twenty percent off your wine purchase. Please always choose a designated driver.
Wine tours for the season begin Father’s Day Weekend, Saturday, June 18 at 1:00p.m. Visit their wine shop in Port Jefferson on Main Street in the Village located next to The Gap. I will be coming back to the vineyard again in mid-August to see the sunflowers in full bloom!
