Sweet Sunday: The American Hotel Desserts

The American Hotel is the quintessential landmark hotel and restaurant of Sag Harbor. Timeless, elegant, and charming, is this heirloom restaurant where composed professionals leisurely enjoy their afternoons sipping a glass of wine from their famous, extensive wine cellar. From a sprinkle of celebrity sightings dazzled with the locals who frequent here that everyone knows and loves to see, to the professional waitstaff and bartenders who work like a well-oiled machine, this is an establishment that has taken great consideration of their guests and consistently achieves better than expected.

My husband and I have been frequenting here for afternoon cocktails during the past few weeks. We come here for the embellished decor but also for the relaxed, at-home vibe. We adore their cheese fondue with pieces of fresh bread that greet you upon entry. I always order their loose leaf Earl grey tea; I feel as if I am taken back in time to a different era as I leisurely sip each cup.

For this particular visit, we came for dessert. Before our daughter was born, we always sat at the bar and snacked on their mixed nuts. As per a recommendation from our waiter, who was extremely kind and knowledgeable, he recommended trying the Bananas Foster ($15)  and we also ordered the Reine de Saba ($12). We had been undecided between the Bananas Foster and the Ile Flottante ($12). An Ile Flottante or a Floating Island is a French dessert consisting of a poached meringue floating on creme anglaise. I would try that next time. It sounded light, not very sweet, and just a tad creamy.

We loved both desserts. I gobbled up the Reine de Saba as usual. It is without a doubt one of the greatest flourless chocolate cake I have ever had. If I could, I would buy a whole cake and bring it home. The fresh berries and sprig of mint compliment it very well and the texture of the cake is exquisite. You can tell only the finest ingredients are used to bake this.

The Bananas Foster was a masterpiece, in both taste and presentation. The light as air freshly whipped cream with the vanilla ice cream, and sweet bananas bathed in caramel are a first class act on your taste-buds. We were both enjoying it at such a rapid pace, we were stunned when we were down to the last tasting. I highly recommend both desserts and encourage you even to come in just for dessert. We are very thankful that the restaurant was so willing to let us sit down at a table for dessert with our daughter.

All desserts are freshly made in-house daily. The desserts at the American Hotel truly are the stars of the show. During any visit you come here, you should never leave without a bite of something sweet.
