One of my favorite places to be during the East End’s summer season, The Surf Lodge in Montauk, recently debuted their new ‘healthy start’ menu that perfectly aligns with their newly opened wellness center, The Surf Lodge Sanctuary.
The new healthy fare menu is for those who want to wake up and feel good about what they eat and be able to continue the day with plenty of energy and motivation. The menu is perfect for before or after a morning workout and is diverse with its offerings for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike.
Culinary Director Shaun Hergatt and Head Chef Robert Sieber have developed new menu selections featuring a variety of healthy bites like the Almond Chia Pudding, the delicious Matcha Bowl, Brooklyn Waffles (ingredients actually brought in daily from BK), Mexican Baked Eggs and more. There is also a selection of enjoyable toasts such as the Ricotta Toast with orange blossom honey, hazelnuts, mint, and pink peppercorns.
Guests can also pair their healthy breakfast with one of their raw juice selections, a fresh roasted cup of Bluestone Lane coffee, or even a cocktail from the new cocktail menu, featuring some of the classics and new favorites.
When we visited The Surf Lodge this past weekend to try the new ‘healthy start’ and ‘down the middle’ menu for the first time, we ordered the following:
Almond Chia Pudding: fresh fruit mint, toasted almonds ($12)
Brooklyn Waffles: local strawberries, rum-mascarpone, maple syrup ($20)
East End Burger: Wagyu beef, white cheddar, special sauce, pickles, onion, French fries ($24)
Grilled Local Vegetables: romesco sauce, lemon ($10)
This is the type of menu you could enjoy almost every weekend, paired with beautiful views of the lake. And with all that is happening The Surf Lodge this season, there is always something to do at the property.
Additional menu items worth noting are the Peekytoe Crab Toast with paragon aioli, tobiko, chives, toasted sourdough; and Mexican Baked Eggs, chorizo, squash blossoms, and tortillas.
Click here to book a table. The brunch menu is currently available on weekends from 11am-2pm. Parking for non-guests is at the railroad station just across from Montauk Manor.

If you already follow me on Instagram, you may have learned that starting in January, I initiated a lifestyle change where I no longer consume refined foods and processed meats. With this new, more active and wellness-focused way of life I have lost weight, feel more alert, and have therefore set a better standard of living for my family.
Many of my elder family members passed away from heart disease and after beginning to notice a difference in my overall appearance and mood that was unsatisfying for me, I decided to commence this full lifestyle change and have been more than thrilled with the results. Yet before receiving the FitTrack Smart Body BMI scale, I was only able to track my weight progress. Achieving my optimal wellbeing and healthiest self is so much more than just analyzing my weight loss.
With the FitTrack Smart Body BMI scale, I have the opportunity to receive such a diverse and clear analysis of my health, including seventeen different health indexes. These include my BMI, muscle mass, visceral fat percentage, body water, bone mass, protein rate, metabolic age, protein mass, and what my standard weight is. I am able to track my history and see my progress over any period of time so that I may make small adjustments to my lifestyle and see how it may directly affect my health. I love that I am also able to have my metrics with me at all times so that I may refer back to them.
Additional perks of the app include morning and nighttime weighing reminders, the opportunity to sync your health data and link the date to your Fitbit. You may also choose to weigh yourself in kilograms or stones. You may also weigh your infant with just a couple simple steps. For me, the FitTrack scale motivates me further to stay on track with my wellness plan and has inspired me to share my experience with friends and family. Specifically, it encourages me to drink more water and eat more water based foods, especially during these increasingly warm summer months.
Knowing your body’s water percentage is a significant factor when it comes to weight loss and being able to clearly see my fat percentage reminds me to make smarter choices at home and while dining out. These are results that I had never been able to see before and I am so grateful I always have these metrics at my fingertips.
Share the FitTrack with your loved ones! The scale recognizes eight different users, all while keeping everyone’s data private. My husband, a physician, has already started his own profile and is also very pleased with his ability to track and analyze his results.
The FitTrack app is FREE and available on both Android and iPhone. Use code EASTENDTASTE20 for an additional 20% off the price.

The HCG diet is considered to be a wonder diet and it deserves to be so. The reason for that is that there is no need to perform strenuous exercises or resort to a strict diet plan with the intention of shedding pounds.
According to some dieters, there is an average weight reduction of around 1 to 2 pounds every day while following this diet. In case, you are contemplating to try out this diet plan, it will be prudent to understand the basics at first. A combination protocol consisting of a low-calorie diet is employed by HCG diet together with the use of HCG hormone that comes in the form of injections or drops. (However, drops are more well-liked for obvious reasons).
Start off the New Year on your best foot with these five delicious snacks and beverages in the specialty food category. These will help restart and recharge your body, while making you feel your very best in 2019. One is also a perfect snack for children for going back to school that comes in five fun flavors!
Eating a healthy diet is not only good for your physical health, but it’s also good for your brain. This is especially so if you are to include superfoods in the diet. They are called superfoods because they are dense in nutrition for one’s health. These foods are mostly plant-based but you’ll also benefit from other sources, including fish, dairy, as well as herbal supplements such as Ginkgo, Ginseng, green tea, and chia as depicted onhttps://slowfoodnation.org/. But what is so special about these foods that they manage to get the suffix “super.”
Often, we believe we need to push ourselves beyond what we can handle. It is so easy to feel the need to fill up our schedules because our open time is seen as free time instead of “me” time. Finding the time for yourself can be difficult when the demands of life take over. But, this is your chance to give your brain a moment to reboot, improve concentration levels, increase productivity, and solve problems effectively. Your mental and physical health is just as important as everything else on your agenda.
“Me,” time allows for a better sense of balance and self-awareness that can lead to a better understanding of yourself. When you begin to give yourself away too much, you start to lose your individuality. Scheduling time for yourself becomes vital to your health when you notice the toll it is taking on your body. It may seem like a silly practice, but this is how you will be able to remind yourself and hold yourself accountable. Also, make your time count. It is tempting to spend your free time running errands or other tasks that might seem pressing but do not be tempted. You do not have to spend a lot of time, but it must be for yourself.

I would love to introduce you to my new favorite post-workout snack: NuGo Protein Cookies! I was introduced to NuGo Nutrition at a wellness event in the Hamptons this past June. Ever since my first bite shortly after the event, I was hooked. The dense, delicious cookie taste had me ordering a box that same day. My husband also loved them as did a few close friends who also had the opportunity to try them. Available on Amazon here.
Everyone can enjoy NuGo Protein Cookies, whether you are vegetarian or vegan. Though I am neither, I do prefer to have certain vegan-friendly foods more often than not. The cookies are also gluten-free!
I like to enjoy my NuGo cookies post-workouts in the late mornings or afternoons after SUP. They really hit the spot after an invigorating Spinning class or a hot kettlebell boot camp. They come in four flavors: Double Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Chocolate, and Oatmeal Raisin. My favorite? Double Chocolate Chip!
These chewy, delicious cookies are quite big! I usually split them in half and enjoy one half in the morning, and the other half after a lite dinner. Each cookie has about 12 grams of fiber and 16 grams of protein, and do not contain soy, eggs, dairy, artificial sweeteners, palm oil, or margarine. To make things even sweeter, the cookies are packed with great taste and the Double Chocolate Chip and Dark Chocolate Chip are loaded with mini chocolate chips.
A little tip I recommend (I will be doing this more during the warmer months), is heating your cookie in the microwave for twenty seconds. If I am feeling a little extra hungry, I pair my cookies with sliced bananas or a teaspoon of almond butter with chia seeds.

As a food journalist, I am not only tasting new foods on a regular basis, there is quite often that temptation to overindulge and give in to cravings, especially sugar cravings, whether I am at an event, media dinner, cocktail party, or trade show. I never realized until very recently not only how much sugar is so easily accessible for me but how much I consumed in a day! Even though my portions have significantly decreased since giving birth to my son last summer, I still found myself giving in to sugary snacks such as chocolates, cookies, crackers, candied nuts, granola bars, and so much more.
Some very exciting additions have landed at The Surf Lodge in Montauk for the 2018 summer season. The Surf Lodge has a grab and go cafe which will be run by Tricia Williams, the Founder of the health-minded food service “Food Matters NYC”. She has launched Daily Dose, which is available at The Surf Lodge and for delivery in the Hamptons this summer. Daily Dose is an affordable line of healthy grab and go food selections.
Did you know that the average Hamptonite gains about ten pounds during the summer? Even with all that soulful spin and planking, it takes a lot to combat the abundance of gourmet food around us every day. Daily Dose can certainly help as their incredibly delicious grab-and-go selection will keep you full and satisfied for hours.
